Resourcefulness

When Prince Albert decided to hold a world's fair in London in 1851, he didn't give his architect much time. Joseph Paxton had only nine months from his initial sketch to the day when the exhibition hall would be open for visitors. And the building itself was going to be the largest ever built, one-third of a mile long, and enclosing over 19 acres of ground—including several full-grown elm trees.

To accommodate this schedule, Paxton invented a system of prefabrication, constructing the entire pavilion from a simple kit of parts, which not so coincidentally, reduced construction costs by fifty percent. The result was the legendary Crystal Palace , a dramatic structure built entirely of iron and glass.
